Training on Managing Mental Stress and the Role of Counselling

On 19 September 2024, a comprehensive training session on mental stress management and the importance of counselling was conducted at the Satyam Community Centre by Ms. Lalitha Chandrasekhar,  an experienced trainer from Chennai. The training, organised for 21 volunteers from SARVAM, aimed to provide a deeper understanding of mental stress, its causes, and the crucial role of counselling in addressing stress-related issues.

The session began with the trainer explaining the concept of mental stress. It was emphasised that stress is a common condition that affects individuals across all age groups, arising from factors such as work pressure, personal relationships, and financial worries. Prolonged stress can have severe consequences on both mental and physical health, potentially leading to anxiety, depression, and chronic illnesses. The trainer highlighted the importance of recognising early signs of stress, such as irritability, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating, to manage the condition effectively before it worsens. Participants were encouraged to adopt healthy coping mechanisms to maintain emotional well-being and lead balanced lives.


Following this, the trainer delved into the role of counselling in managing stress. Counselling provides individuals with a safe space to express their feelings and gain insights into the root causes of their stress. Professional counsellors guide people through this process, helping them reframe negative thoughts, develop healthier behavioural patterns, and build self-awareness. The session emphasised how addressing stress through counselling at an early stage can prevent its harmful effects on both mental and physical health. By improving overall well-being, counselling supports individuals in leading more fulfilling lives.

The long-term benefits of counselling were also discussed. Counselling not only provides immediate stress relief but also equips individuals with tools to manage future stressors. These benefits include enhanced resilience, improved emotional intelligence, and better communication skills in both personal and professional relationships. The trainer noted that regular counselling sessions can help build self-confidence and promote a positive mindset, enabling individuals to navigate life’s challenges more effectively. As mental health awareness grows, the importance of counselling as a vital resource for maintaining well-being continues to increase.


The training concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, where participants were encouraged to discuss their concerns and share diverse viewpoints. This session fostered a deeper sense of empathy among the volunteers, enhancing group cohesion and understanding. It was evident from the discussions that the participants found the training extremely valuable. They expressed a desire for additional sessions to further their understanding and improve their skills in managing stress and providing counselling.

The request for extended training sessions underscored the volunteers’ eagerness to delve deeper into the topics covered. Extended sessions would provide opportunities for hands-on practice, personalised feedback, and better retention of the material. This additional training would not only reinforce the learning but also enhance the volunteers’ ability to apply these strategies in real-life situations, benefiting their communities and themselves.
