SARVAM, in collaboration with HelpAge India, organised an Aged People – Mental Health and Refreshing Programme for 75 elderly women from 15 villages at the Satyam Community Centre. The programme aimed to promote mental and physical well-being, encourage healthy ageing, and strengthen social connectedness among senior citizens. It also sought to create awareness about the importance of emotional health, active living, and the various support systems available to elderly women.

A team of experienced physiotherapists from HelpAge India conducted an informative session on managing common age-related ailments, with particular emphasis on reducing joint and muscle pain, maintaining mobility, and improving overall physical fitness. The participants were introduced to simple yet effective exercises and daily movement practices that can help enhance flexibility, reduce discomfort, and support an active and independent lifestyle. The doctors also highlighted the importance of regular physical activity, proper posture, and preventive healthcare in ensuring a better quality of life during old age.

An engaging drama performance formed an important part of the programme, sensitising participants to the significance of positive family relationships and the need for mutual understanding, respect, and care for elderly members. Through relatable situations and meaningful storytelling, the performance reinforced the values of compassion, emotional support, and intergenerational harmony, inspiring participants to nurture stronger family bonds.

The programme also included an awareness session on various government welfare schemes available for senior citizens. Participants were informed about the benefits, eligibility criteria, and procedures for accessing these schemes, enabling them to make better use of the social security and support services designed to improve their well-being and financial security.

To create a joyful and refreshing atmosphere, the programme incorporated a variety of recreational games and interactive activities that encouraged enthusiastic participation. These sessions brought laughter, enjoyment, and renewed energy while fostering friendships and strengthening the sense of community among the participants. The activities also demonstrated the importance of recreation and social interaction in promoting emotional well-being and reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation.

The programme concluded with an experience-sharing session, where the elderly women openly discussed their personal journeys, health concerns, and coping strategies. This interactive exchange created a warm and supportive environment, allowing participants to learn from one another, offer encouragement, and build stronger emotional connections. The session also reinforced the value of peer support in maintaining positive mental health and resilience.

The programme was highly appreciated by the participants, who expressed gratitude for the informative sessions, practical demonstrations, and opportunities for meaningful social interaction. As an outcome, the initiative significantly enhanced participants’ awareness of healthy ageing practices, improved their confidence in managing age-related challenges, and strengthened their emotional well-being. The women left the programme feeling refreshed, informed, empowered, and motivated to lead healthier, happier, and more socially connected lives.
