SARVAM organised a one-day capacity-building training programme for Village Volunteers and AuroSakhis with the objective of enhancing their effectiveness in conducting door-to-door community outreach. The training was designed to address a common challenge frequently encountered by field workers—community members often hesitate to engage in conversations due to lack of time, disinterest, or competing commitments. Recognising that meaningful community mobilisation begins with trust and respectful communication, the programme focused on equipping participants with practical skills to improve household interactions and strengthen community participation.

The training brought together volunteers and AuroSakhis who actively engaged in a series of interactive learning sessions. The programme commenced with an ice-breaker activity titled “The Closed Door and Open Door,” which encouraged participants to reflect on their own experiences as recipients of visitors and outreach efforts. This exercise helped participants better understand the perspectives, emotions, and concerns of community members, fostering greater empathy and awareness in their approach.

A key component of the training was a role-play session in which participants were divided into groups and assigned common field scenarios that they regularly encounter during household visits. Through these practical exercises, participants learned and practised essential communication techniques such as introducing themselves confidently, listening attentively, demonstrating empathy, responding respectfully to concerns, and identifying appropriate opportunities for follow-up discussions. The role-plays provided a safe environment for participants to refine their interpersonal skills and receive constructive feedback.

Resource persons highlighted several principles essential for successful community outreach. Participants were encouraged to approach households with respect, patience, and a positive attitude; listen carefully before presenting information; keep initial conversations concise and relevant; use simple and accessible language; and focus on addressing community needs and benefits rather than organisational objectives. The importance of consistent follow-up, relationship-building, and maintaining trust over time was also emphasised.

The training further provided an opportunity for participants to share their field experiences and discuss challenges encountered during community mobilisation. Through collaborative discussions, volunteers explored practical strategies to overcome resistance, improve communication, and foster greater participation in community programmes. These exchanges enabled participants to learn from one another’s experiences and identify effective approaches suited to their local contexts.

The programme concluded with a commitment exercise during which each participant developed a personal action plan outlining specific steps to enhance the quality and effectiveness of their household visits. This reflective activity encouraged participants to translate learning into action and reinforced their commitment to serving their communities more effectively.

Overall, the training significantly strengthened the confidence, communication abilities, and outreach skills of Village Volunteers and AuroSakhis. It reinforced the importance of empathy, patience, active listening, and relationship-building as foundational elements of successful community engagement. By enhancing the capacity of frontline volunteers, the programme contributed to creating stronger connections with community members and promoting greater participation in developmental initiatives.
