Empowering Storytellers: ToT on Moral Storytelling and Bala Vihars

Date: Date: 29 April 2025

Location:  Chinmaya Mission, Pondicherry

On 29th April 2025, Chinmaya Mission in collaboration with SARVAM, Puducherry, conducted an enriching Training of Trainers (ToT) programme on moral storytelling and Bala Vihars at the Chinmaya Mission premises in Pondicherry. The training was designed for village volunteers with the objective of empowering them to meaningfully engage children through value-based narratives and initiate Bala Vihar activities in their communities.

Led by an experienced Acharya from Chinmaya Mission, the sessions were interactive and rooted in traditional wisdom. The Acharya introduced practical storytelling techniques, placing special emphasis on the use of body language, gestures,
facial expressions, and clapping to make storytelling dynamic and engaging for young minds. These methods aim to help children better absorb and internalise moral values conveyed through stories.

The training also provided clear guidelines on establishing and managing Bala Vihars in villages. Volunteers were shown how to form consistent children’s groups, plan structured activities, and create joyful, conducive learning environments. Interactive practices like group discussions, expressive storytelling, and role-playing were demonstrated to enhance children’s communication, creativity, and moral development.

Participants responded with great enthusiasm, expressing their eagerness to implement what they had learnt. They found the blend of traditional stories with modern, action-based storytelling approaches both practical and inspiring. The training instilled a renewed sense of purpose and confidence among the volunteers, who are now equipped to initiate Bala Vihars that foster holistic development in children through joy, engagement, and strong cultural values.
