Shanthi Ashram of Coimbatore conducted an interactive online session on nutritional literacy and care for children and adolescents with HIV. Around 35 adolescent students and 10 mothers participated in the program.
In the first part of the session, a brief introduction was given to nutritional literacy and care for children and adolescents living with HIV. This was followed by a discussion on the importance of nutrition in managing HIV and creating an environment for nutrition care. The session concluded with a focus on the challenges and solutions related to nutrition and HIV.
During the second session, strategies to prevent macro- and micronutrient deficiencies among children and adolescents living with HIV were discussed based on the current evidence.
The trainer also discussed innovative ways of improving nutrition among HIV-positive individuals and how to enhance nutritional literacy among the population.
Additionally, discussing recent experiences with seeking nutritional advice helped clear up many concerns about the children’s safety. This provided a platform for sharing useful tips and resources with the mothers.
The trainer explained the four goals of HIV nutrition care, which are to maintain nutritional status and prevent disease, promote optimal nutrition, prevent malnutrition, to manage or reduce HIV-related symptoms and Enhance compliance with ART. She also explained about immune boosters and a balanced diet in everyday life.
The trainer emphasised that good nutrition is essential for long-term health and well-being. Studies have found that people with HIV who regularly eat healthy food in the right amounts can better tolerate HIV drugs, maintain a healthy weight, and feel better overall.
In conclusion, the session concluded with the resolution to stay in touch with the surrounding families and share valuable tips with them.
